Palliative Care

Long-Term Health Services in the Monterey Peninsula

Serious illnesses require close monitoring and a round-the-clock medical attention. This is the kind of service you and your loved ones can expect at Salinas Valley Medical Clinic’s palliative care unit. Palliative care is an intensive treatment where patients suffering chronic illnesses like heart failure and advances cancer have access to the specialized care they need. While many palliative conditions can be life-threatening, they are not death sentences. Patients often recover from their illness or return to a stable enough condition that they can return home.

Goals of Palliative Care

The primary goal of palliative care is to improve the patient’s quality of life. Palliative care is often coupled with intense treatments to help the patient recover from their illness. Patients and their families deserve to know their realistic chances of recovering, and the medical staff prepares them with honest information about the various outcomes of their treatment.

Patients may be admitted to palliative care if they are diagnosed chronic problems such as:

  • Alzheimer’s
  • Dementia
  • Cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s disease

For a condition like Alzheimer’s or dementia, for which there is no known cure, patients receive attentive treatments designed to alleviate depression and discomfort. These patients have not necessarily reached the end of their life, and palliative care provides them with an opportunity to live as comfortably as possible with their condition.

Support for Patients & Families

Requiring palliative care is difficult on both patients and families. In addition to treating the patient’s physical needs, SVMC provides emotional support services for them and their loved ones. Our staff creates open lines of communication so all parties involves can stay informed on the various options available to them.

The Palliative Care program is funded in part by a generous gift from Hospice Giving Foundation.
