A FAMILY-CENTERED BIRTH EXPERIENCE
Whether you’re expecting your first child or are already a mom, we
believe every birth should be a special, family-centered experience. We
promote shared decision-making and involve you and your spouse or partner
every step of the way.
Our maternity care teams do everything they possibly can to ensure that
you have your baby, your way. To personalize your birth experience as
much as possible, we ask you to fill out our Birth Preferences Worksheet, (ENG &
SPA) where you can list your preferences about everything from laboring with
a doula, to pain management, to newborn care. Our caring, compassionate
team will explain your options and help you make the best decisions for
you and your baby. We can help you with:
- Staying healthy throughout pregnancy
- Managing pregnancy-related discomfort
- Healthy eating “for two”
- All the necessary exams & tests
- Preparation for labor & delivery
- Whether an epidural or natural childbirth is right for you
- Childbirth preparation classes
LABOR AND DELIVERY
Our Labor and Delivery facility has nine private suites for labor, delivery,
and recovery, with pullout beds for a partner or labor coach to catch
some rest or stay overnight. Feel free to bring items to that make you
feel comfortable, such as photographs, massage balls, or your own pillow.
We have Bluetooth in every room, so you can play music from your phone
or tablet. To help you relax, our nurses are trained in soothing integrative
arts such as high touch care and massage, aromatherapy and oils. We allow
one support person in the room with you, plus up to four additional visitors.
As an official “Baby Friendly” hospital, we place your baby
on your breast right after birth to encourage immediate bonding and feeding.
We have excellent breastfeeding rates thanks to our
lactation support program.
Breast milk is the best possible food for your child. Not only does breast
milk contain the ideal balance of nutrients to help your baby grow, it
also contains antibodies that help protect your baby from illness and
infection. And, of course, breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond
between you and your baby. As a strong proponent of breastfeeding, SVMH
is a proud participant in The Baby-Friendly Initiative, a global program
sponsored by the United Nations International Children’s Fund and
the World Health Organization. The Initiative recognizes hospitals and
birth centers that offer an evidence-based, optimal level of care to promote
breastfeeding. After delivery, you’ll move into a postpartum room
with a comfortable bed and a sofa for your support person, so you can
both get some much-needed rest. When you get hungry, we treat you and
your support person to a special meal.
CESAREANS AND VBACS
If you had a cesarean delivery in the past, you may still be a candidate
for a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Be sure to discuss this with
your doctor and get his or her approval first. Our VBAC success rate is 78%!
Of course, sometimes a cesarean is medically necessary, either on a planned
or urgent basis. Our C-section rate is quite low – 21% compared
to the national target rate of 23.9%. We have a dedicated OR and recovery
room just for Cesareans, with a surgical team on call at all times. We
use a transparent drape when performing C-sections so that patients and
their partners can see the baby right away and form an immediate emotional
