The Comprehensive Community Cancer Program at Salinas Valley Memorial has long recognized the value of complementary medicine services, such as Reiki. The benefits include; pain reduction, symptom and stress management, a greater ability to relax, focus, cope and sleep, and relief from fatigue and nausea that often accompany treatments and improved energy levels. Reiki has been found to be especially helpful for people living with cancer.
Certified Reiki practitioners are highly trained and skilled in laying hands directly on or just above an area of the body. The hands are usually kept still for a few minutes before moving to the next area. People who receive it say that they feel warmth or a tingling in the area being treated, even when the nontouching approach is used. A state of deep relaxation along with a feeling of well-being are usually the most immediate and notice able effects. Reiki can be performed by one or several practitioners at the same time.
Available to all patients of Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, Reiki has been approved by the Board of Registered Nurses, the Oncology Nursing Society and the Holistic Nurses Society. There are more than 20 Reiki practitioners on staff.
