An MRI utilizes a magnetic field and radio waves to create a cross-sectional image of the head and body. The images are essential in the diagnosis of central nervous system disorders as well as joint, ligament, muscle, and bone problems. A radiologist evaluates the MRI images to analyze organ function, blood flow, the presence of growths or lesions, and abnormal size or position of organs, bones, blood vessels or soft tissue structures. MRIs also make it possible to identify damage caused by heart attack or heart disease and to detect plaque and blockages in the blood vessels.
