SVMHS Asthma Camp Offers Fun Education

SVMHS Asthma Camp Offers Fun Education

More than two dozen children living with asthma graduated from a week-long camp experience focused on how to manage their condition and build confidence in sports and other activities.

After a year off due to COVID-19, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System brought back the annual Mark Velcoff, M.D. Asthma Camp. The camp now in its 36th year, returned with masking precautions and social distancing for classroom learning sessions.

The 2021 program expanded outdoor adventures such as hiking, swimming, morning Zumba and whiffle ball, which proved to be a crowd favorite. Campers learn about their condition, such as what triggers their asthma, the importance of the medications they take and how asthma affects their bodies.

The physical activities all take place under the supervision of trained staff, including physicians and clinical volunteers from Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. Steven Prager, M.D. serves as camp medical director. The experience is made possible by generous donations to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
