Grand Opening Diabetes & Endocrine Center

What: Diabetes & Endocrine Center serving Monterey County
When: Wednesday, August 30th 2017
Time: 5:30 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Where: Primecare Medical Facility, 2nd floor
355 Abbot Street, Salinas

Story: Diabetes has been identified as a high priority by health professionals at the national, state and local levels. After five months of construction and a four million dollar investment, the grand opening of the new Salinas Valley Health Clinics Diabetes & Endocrine Center ushers in a new era of population health management of diabetes. The Center is taking on the disease with comprehensive resources, technology and medical personnel to affect change in the community and reverse the astonishing trend of diabetes in our region.

Resources: the 10,000 square foot Center will serve as a one-stop shop for diabetes treatment and research in Monterey County. Board certified endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, diabetes educators and nutritionists will work together and collaboratively with partners such as Monterey County, other hospitals and the YMCA to provide advanced treatment and management of this disease.

Technology: The Center is one of only 60 sites worldwide to provide patients with a groundbreaking diabetes management tool. It is called the MediMed 670 G, a high tech insulin pump worn outside the body. The FDA approved device continuously monitors glucose levels and delivers insulin 24 hours a day based on personal needs. Patients describe it as life changing.

Diabetes Facts: Fifty-seven percent of the population in Monterey County has diabetes or pre-diabetes. Diabetes can shorten the lives of people and in many cases leads to the amputation of limbs and even blindness. In 2015, about 13.8% of Monterey County Latinos reported being diagnosed with diabetes, compared to 4.8% of whites and 4.4% of Asians. (CHIS)

Interviews and Visuals: A wide range of physicians, executives, community partners and patients will attend the ribbon-cutting event and be available for interviews. There will be a short program, ribbon cutting, tours, healthy eating cooking demonstration in the on-site kitchen, interactive kiosk in the patient waiting area and more.

Preview tours and interviews available around noon. Please call to arrange.
