Salinas Valley Health EARNS “TOP PERFORMER ON KEY QUALITY MEASURES ®” RECOGNITION FROM THE JOINT COMMISSION

The leading accreditor of health care organizations in American has named Salinas Valley Health (Salinas Valley Health) a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures®. The Joint Commission recognizes Salinas Valley Health for demonstrating outstanding performance in the areas of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. The achievement is highlighted in The Joint Commission’s 2014 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety.”

“There is nothing more important than providing our patients with the very best care and this recognition validates once again, that we are among the best hospitals in the nation,” says president/CEO Pete Delgado. “Our Top Performer status is a direct result of the dedication, skills and teamwork shown by our physicians, nurses and entire staff.”

The Joint Commission’s Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improving performance on evidence-based interventions that positively impact healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions. To be a Top Performer, Salinas Valley Health had to meet three performance criteria based on 2013 accountability measure data, including:

  • Achieving cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures;
  • Achieving performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there were at least 30 denominator cases; and
  • Having at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and (within that measure set) all applicable individual accountability measures had a performance rate of 95 percent or above.

The rigorous criteria are based on specific action known as evidence based clinical processes – for example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients and giving antibiotics one hour before surgery.

“Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality health care. I commend the efforts of Salinas Valley Memorial for their excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and CEO, The Joint Commission.
