Our palliative care team uses a variety of approaches and therapies to
control symptoms, manage pain, reduce stress and make you more comfortable.
This specialized area of medicine has been shown to enhance quality of
life for patients and their family members
Palliative care is not the same as hospice care. While hospice is only
for people in the final months of life, palliative care can help at any
age and at any stage of a serious illness. It can take place at the same
time as other hospital treatments including those intended to cure your
What You Get from Our Palliative Care Team
At SVMH, our Palliative Care team includes board-certified physicians,
nurses, social workers and spiritual care providers. We work together
with your doctors, pharmacists, nurses and practitioners of healing arts
such as music, art, pet therapy, aromatherapy, massage and healing touch.
Together, we make sure that you receive:
- Expert treatment of your pain and other symptoms including shortness of
breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, anxiety and problems
- Care that helps improve your ability to tolerate medical treatments.
- Improved communication about your illness and understanding of your treatment choices.
- Coordination of your care among all your healthcare providers.
- Emotional and spiritual support for you and your family.
- Referral and coordination of home care services, including hospice care
Insurance plans, including Medicare and Medi-Cal, cover palliative care
services. This is similar to coverage for other medical care such as for
heart disease, cancer or injury. SVMHS is partnered with VNA for Palliative
With a generous grant of $80,000 from the Hospice Giving Foundation, the
palliative medicine team at SVMHS will be able to greatly enhance the
spiritual care services already provided for hospitalized patients and
their families. Since its inception in 1997, Hospice Giving Foundation
has granted almost $25 million dollars to programs in San Benito and Monterey
Counties. The Hospice Giving Foundation is dedicated to strengthening
and improving palliative, hospice and end of life services.
