Salinas Valley Memorial has planned a four-week celebration of Heart Month, with activities scheduled to begin today, February 1st. The events will commemorate the 22nd anniversary of Salinas Valley Memorial's Harden Memorial Heart Program and offer employees and the community opportunities to learn about heart health. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States and on the Central Coast region.
February 1: "Exercise Challenge" Kick-OffBeginning February 1, the hospital will kick-off "Exercise Challenge," a ten-week program designed to encourage people to get regular aerobic exercise. Organizations may enter, with awards being given to those who excel in their category. All individuals who exercise for at least 90 minutes per week for all ten weeks will be eligible for an array of prizes. The program is free and organizations may register by calling the SVMHS Health Promotions Department at 759-1890.
February 5: "Walk With Heart"Heart Center Entrance, Salinas Valley Memorial 12:00pmTo coincide with the American Heart Association's "National Wear Red Day," employees are invited to wear red and join together for a walk around the hospital. The walk will begin at the Heart Center entrance at 12:00pm.
February 9, 16, 23: "Walk the Talk"Heart Center Entrance, Salinas Valley Memorial, 12:00pmTuesdays in February at 12:00pm, Heart Program leaders, staff and physicians will lead by example by inviting all SVMHS employees to join them in a walk around the hospital to promote exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. The walk will begin at the Heart Center entrance.
February 9-11: "Heart Matters"Cislini Plaza, Salinas Valley Memorial, 11am-2pmFor the week of February 9-11, Salinas Valley Memorial Employees are welcome to stop by the tent located outside of the cafeteria, in the Cislini Plaza, from 11am-2pm for the "Heart Matters" tent event to watch healthy cooking demonstrations, learn more about heart health and register to win a free cardiac calcium scoring at Salinas Valley Memorial's Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center.
February 24: "Ask the Experts"5 Lower Ragsdale Drive, MontereyOn Wednesday, February 24, a special "Ask the Experts" event will be held at Salinas Valley Memorial's Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center, 5 Lower Ragsdale Drive, Ryan Ranch. At this free event, the community has the opportunity to learn about heart health from a panel of experts including: Dr. Timothy Albert, Dr. Vincent DeFilippi and Dr. Mazhar Javaid. Topics will include advanced cardiac imaging, minimally invasive surgery and sleep's affects on cardiac health. The event starts at 4:30pm with registration, screenings, appetizers and refreshments.
