SVMHS Earns “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures®” Recognition from The Joint Commission

Salinas, CA, November 20, 2013 - The leading accreditor of health care organizations in American has named Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System a Top Performer nationwide. The Joint Commission reports SVMHS has earned recognition as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by demonstrating exemplary performance in the areas of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.

SVMHS is one of only 1,099 hospitals in the U.S. earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence shown to improve care for patients with certain conditions. To be included in the country’s Top Performers, a hospital must be providing the very best industry standard of care 95 out of every 100 times. The rigorous criteria are based on specific action known as evidence based clinical processes – for example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients and giving antibiotics one hour before surgery.

“There is nothing more important than providing patients with the best care they can possibility get - not just here in Monterey County, but anywhere,” says president/CEO Pete Delgado. “We value this recognition from The Joint Commission as a Top Performer because it means our own internal standards for patient care are on par with the best hospitals in the nation.”

The ratings are based a variety of accountability data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2012 calendar year. In addition to being included in The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, SVMHS is recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org). The Top Performer program will be featured in the December issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Source.

Top Performer on Key Quality Measures from the Joint Commission is just the latest national recognition for patient care SVMHS has earned this fall. The Leapfrog Group gave Salinas Valley Memorial an “A” grade when it looked at hospitals nationwide for safety, quality and efficiency. Another independent, national organization tracking quality named SVMHS in the top 5% in the nation for stroke and top 10% in the nation for neurosciences. That recognition from Healthgrades also honored SVMHS for outstanding care in Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Pulmonary, Gastrointestinal, and Critical Care.
