Career Pathways Program

Career Pathways Program

This new approach to student volunteering places the emphasis on learning job skills applicable to any future career. Career Pathways Program (CPP) was developed to provide students with practical experience related to their classroom learning. Students enrolled in this year-long program may be eligible for Community Classroom work experience credit, based on successful completion of stated learning objectives and a passing grade. Community Service hours are not awarded for students eligible for school credit.

This is an outstanding opportunity for high school and college students to experience what it is like to work inside a hospital, featuring three pathways:

  • Business services
  • Retail management
  • Clinical services

In the Retail Management Pathway students will learn about retail sales, marketing, merchandising and buying.

The Business Services Pathway provides experience in the areas of receptionist, computer, office machines and light clerical support.

The Clinical Services Pathway offers opportunities in departments such as surgery, diagnostic imaging and nursing services.

Applicant Requirements:

  • High school or college student (minimum age is 15)
  • Ability to commit to weekly schedule

Before placement, students will complete the following:

  • Program application
  • Informational meeting with parent or guardian
  • Placement interview
  • Background check
  • TB screening
  • Program orientation
  • On-the-job training

Medical Adventure Camp At SVMH

To date, 59 adventurous youths, ages 10 to 12, have participated in Medical Adventure Camp at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. This day camp, sponsored by the Children's Miracle Network, the hospital's medical staff and the Service League Volunteers, provided an up close and personal look at the many career and volunteer opportunities in health care.

The idea for the innovative camp came to Lynn Brooks, Director of Volunteer and Health Career Services as a result of her attendance at a Gang Awareness Task Force luncheon. The presentation pointed out that local children ages 10 to 12 are at high risk for delinquency since this age group is often targeted by gang members seeking to increase their ranks.

Through a Native American Indian theme, the camp provides positive role models, opportunities for bonding with kids of other races and socio-economic backgrounds, and exposure to the benefits of a caring community.

Participants learned about a variety of health-related topics in interactive classes and activities. Student volunteers helped guide the campers, and hospital staff and physicians presented the classes and activities.

Up to 20 participants area accepted annually, and scholarships are available to children whose families cannot afford the $100 fee. Please call us at 755-0772 for more information.
