Caring for Women and Children - Raising the Bar on Quality
Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System has a history of "firsts" related to maternity care. We created the first single-room maternity care in the region; labor and delivery take place in one comfortable, attractive room, a nurturing, and home like setting.
Through our partnership with Lucille Packard Children's Hospital we created the first and only Perinatal Diagnostic Center in Monterey County. Dr. Amen Ness, medical director of the Perinatal Diagnostic Center and a clinical assistant professor at Stanford, is the only full time resident perinatalist on the Central Coast. Imagine, access to a Stanford faculty member and the world-renowned reputation of Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, right here on the Central Coast.
Care for mothers and newborns
Most newborns stay with their mothers but when babies require extra care a newborn nursery, with a multi-disciplinary team of obstetricians, nursing staff, obstetrics technologists and support services, is ready and available.
Care for ill and premature babies
Through our partnership with Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and creation of the first and only Perinatal Diagnostic Center in Monterey County, women with high-risk pregnancies have access to the best care without leaving home. Immediately adjacent to the single room maternity center is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a level III facility qualified to care for critically ill and premature infants.
Lactation services & preparation
We have a board certified lactation consultant on staff offering free-of-charge support groups, telephone counseling/support and education for expectant and nursing mothers and families. Call 757-4333, ext. 2852 for more information.
Newborns' hearing testing
Early detection of hearing problems is the key to preventing a lifetime of hardships. Because hearing problems often go undetected during the first two years of a child's life, we give newborns a fast and painless hearing test.
