The 2005 Volvo Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle, raised more than $2 million for programs that enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The 100-mile bike ride, originating in Carmel Valley, wound its way south on scenic Highway 1, crossing the finish line in San Simeon. A team of physicians, nurses and staff from several hospital departments, sponsored by Salinas Valley Memorial, raised more than $20,000 during the October 1 event. Initiated and led by Alex Dubelman, MD, an anesthesiologist on the medical staff and a partner in Cypress Coast Anesthesia Medical Group, the team put their compassion into action.
Best Buddies, founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver in 1989 as a single college chapter, now has programs around the world. Funds raised through the races and other activities are used to assist intellectually disabled individuals of all ages with job placement and integration into their local communities. “Best Buddies organized a fantastic event for a great cause,” says Dr. Dubelman who has a son with autism. “I am so appreciative of all the people who literally went the distance to raise funds that help so many with special needs. The commitment of the Salinas Valley Memorial family made this year’s event a true success.”
