Reaching Out to Those in Need
Long time community member and Salinas Valley Memorial board member Dr. Robert Morris is truly a Neighbor Who Cares. When Hurricane Katrina hit the southern United States he packed his mobile home and hit the road, coordinating his efforts through his church, Shoreline Community Church in Monterey. Dr. Morris is a long time philanthropist who believes in helping our neighbors here, or across the country. When he completed the Emergency Medical Residence Program at the University of Southern California in 1974 he joined the Peace Corps as Director of Medical and Emergency Services for the American Embassy in Kinshasa, Zaire, Africa. He treated Embassy staff members and Peace Corps volunteers in Kinshasa as well as local residents when he visited village hospitals in nearby provinces.
As the founder of Doctors on Duty, Dr. Morris brings a unique set of experiences to the Salinas Valley Memorial Board, including medical credentials, clinical management and business acumen. These attributes will assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the medical staff working tirelessly since this disaster struck. Dr. Morris is board-certified in emergency medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. His quiet listening and analytical skills will help to provide a safe haven to those surviving the storm.
Since he stepped down from Doctors on Duty, Dr. Morris relishes his role as a nurturer of his family since they are his passion. A week after his arrival to the south he’ll be joined by his wife, Maureen, and their children, sharing their humanitarian spirit.
