Emergency Preparedness
September is National Preparedness Month. Experts say it’s best to think ahead and plan for potential emergencies such as fire, flood and earthquakes. Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System suggests that putting a plan down on paper is a great start. A written plan puts all critical information in one document. Make sure family members, and friends, are familiar with it and know where copies are kept, such as home, work and in the car. Being prepared can not only reduce anxiety and time, but can save lives.
While it varies by individual and family, a basic plan includes items such as emergency phone numbers; home, car and health insurance information; utility service contacts; a plan for reuniting with family; a list of medications; and layout of the home including utility shutoff points and location of fire extinguishers, flashlights and candles as well a week’s store of water, non-perishable food and essential medications.
