Planning Ahead For Joint Replacement Surgery

Even though you'll be able to walk with a cane, crutches or a walker, you may need help with everyday tasks like cooking, shopping and laundry. If you live alone, you may want someone to assist you for at least part of each day. Another option for some people is a short stay in an extended care facility during the recovery period.

Some simple changes around your home can reduce the amount of reaching and bending you'll have to do during your recovery. Remove all loose carpets and tape down electrical cords to avoid falls. Put items you use often within easy reach.

Special equipment may help you have a safer and easier recovery. An elevated toilet seat, a stable shower bench and a long-handled gripper may be helpful. Installing secure handrails and grab bars in your shower will help you steady yourself. You'll also need a stable chair with a firm set cushion, a firm back and two arms.
