SVMHS & NASA partnership logoPartners In Health Technology

The partnership with NASA is an ongoing relationship. On September 9, 1998, a Space Act Agreement with NASA was signed—a contractual arrangement between the Hospital and NASA that defines purpose and responsibilities of the partnership. By May of 1998 the Hospital will be equipped with the new NASA 3-Dimensional imaging capability for diagnostic analysis. Said analysis will be transmitted via PC or NASA low earth orbiting satellites in real time (virtual reality) to any location on earth and, eventually, into space. Ongoing NASA medical education programs are being implemented for the communities served by the Hospital.

In October of 1998 the Hospital flew a number of commemorative SVMH/NASA logo patches onboard STS-95—the John Glenn mission. By June of 1999, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital will be linked with Stanford and Cleveland Research Clinic as one of three medical facilities in the world that hold the designation "Virtual Hospital."

Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) signed a new Space Act Agreement on July 21, 2004—the second such agreement between the two organizations. The partnership will allow NASA Ames BioVIS (Biological Visualization, Imaging and Simulation) Technology Center and SVMHS to work together in 3-dimensional, digital fusion-imaging projects. NASA and SVMHS-Working together to further research in space and medical care here at home.
