The hospital pharmacy department consists of an order processing and dispensing area, a USP 797 Clean Room for compounding sterile products, a library and offices.
Our pharmacy utilizes computerized patient profiles, automated dispensing machines and drug information available throughout the facility. This allows pharmacists, nurses and physicians access to critical information about the patients' medications anywhere in the hospital.
The pharmacy services provided include drug dosing per protocol, satellite pharmacists in the critical care and oncology areas, NICU and ICU rounding, medication reconciliation, profile review for dose adjustments, drug-drug interactions and therapeutic duplicates.
Several of our pharmacists provide mentorship to pharmacy externs completing their education. Several pharmacy schools in California send students to participate in this program.
A collaborative project, eMAR -BMV - Bar Code, involving pharmacy, nursing and information technology, will be implemented in the spring of 2009. This is Electronic Medication Administration Record, Bedside Medication Verification with Bar Code technology). This medication safety project will utilize bar code technology when nurses administer medications to patients. Once the pharmacist has reviewed and approved the medication order, the nurse scans the medication, verifying the correct medication for the correct patient.
