Ask The Experts

Ask The ExpertsAsk The Experts is a FREE community lecture series, offered by SVMHS covering various medical issues. The foundation of any health and wellness program is awareness and education. Our Ask The Experts events take place on a monthly basis and provide either a panel of experts or physicians and individuals with medical expertise on topics of interest. The free events provide the community an opportunity to learn and have their questions answered. All SVMHS Ask the Experts events provide a Spanish language interpreter and listening equiptment upon RSVP. For more information, call the Health Promotion Department at 831.759.1890.

 Wednesday, October 1st - Concussions and Sports Safety, Precautions and Concussion Care
 

Update your on-field evaluation of concussions and learn the latest facts about concussion diagnosis, treatment and post-concussion care.  Athletic directors, coaches, medical field personnel, parents and students are all encouraged to attend.


Patricia Scripko, MD

Dr. Patricia Scripko, MD recently joined SVMHS and is a neurologist with an interest in headache, traumatic brain injuries and concussions. She received her medical degree from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. During her time at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College, Dr. Scripko also earned her Masters Degree in Bioethics and went on to present her thesis at Oxford University.



 Bert Tardieu, MD

Dr. Bert Tardieu, MD joined Salinas Valley Memorial in 1994 and served as Chief of Surgery at the hospital from 2009-2011. Dr. Tardieu is board certified and a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is an orthopedic surgeon at Precision Orthopedics in Salinas and a team physician at Palma High School and Hartnell College.

 Thursday, October 9th - Wellness for Women Event featuring
a Drawing to Win Tickets to Oprah's The Life You Want Weekend!



This event will feature a very special drawing for two (2) tickets to Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend at SAP Center in San Jose on Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15, 2014.   You must attend this Wellness for Women Ask the Experts event and be present to win.  



Joanna Oppenheim, MD

Joanna Oppenheim, MD joined Salinas Valley Memorial's medical staff in January 2002 and PrimeCare Medical Group in February 2007.  She enjoys the variety that family practice offers.  She is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

After graduating with a BA from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, she earned her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.  Dr. Oppenheim completed her family medicine residency at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where she was chief resident.



 Rachel Beck, MD

Rachel Beck, MD moved to Salinas and joined the medical staff at Salinas Valley Memorial in November 2002. Originally from Gainesville, Florida, she graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine. She earned a BS in Molecular Biology from MIT, Cambridge, MA. Dr. Beck chose obstetrics and gynecology because of the emphasis on prevention and education and feels she can make difference in not just one life, but many. She has significant experience in use of robotic technology in performing a variety of procedures. Prior to joining SVMHS, Dr. Beck was Clinical Instructor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida, Jacksonville.




William Khieu, MD

William Khieu, MD, MBA joined Salinas Valley Memorial’s medical staff in 2003 and served many patients in Monterey County since 1997. He has extensive training and experience in minimally invasive techniques including use of robotic surgical technology. He is the first surgeon in Monterey County to use robotics and has performed hundreds of cases. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has taught many practicing physicians in Monterey County.

Dr. Khieu earned a BS in physiology at the University of California, Davis, his MD from the University of California, San Francisco and an executive master business administration from Golden Gate University, Monterey. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of California, San Francisco’s Fresno program.

In addition to being the managing partner of OB-GYN Associates of the Central Coast, Dr. Khieu has served as president of Monterey County Medical Society and as an Expert Reviewer for the California Medical Board and has been honored with numerous local and national awards over the years. He was the Interim Director of Operating Room Services and Director of the Women’s Health Center at Natividad Medical Center.

 Thursday, October 23rd - Sleep Hygiene Tips

After graduating from Nishtar Medical College in 1974, Mazhar Javaid, M.D. completed an internal medicine internship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Lincoln Medical Center, Bronx, New York and his residency in internal medicine at New York Medical School, Misericorda-Lincoln Hospitals. He completed pulmonary fellowships through the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at Veterans Administration Hospital in East Orange and Hackensack Medical Center, Hackensack. Dr. Javaid is a board certified Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Pulmonary Medicine and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Javaid is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

 Wednesday, November 12th Men's Preventative Health

Pete Oppenheim, MD

Dr. Oppenheim is a family physician.  He is board-certified in Family Practice by the American Board of Family Practice.  He earned his medical degree from the University of California Los Angeles and completed his residency at Community Hospital, Santa Rosa.  Dr. Oppenheim taught Family Medicine at the University of Utah and the University of California San Francisco.  He also has served as the Medical Director for the Primary Care Division of the Monterey County Health Department and the Family Medicine Center at Natividad Medical Center.  His medical interests include preventive care with an emphasis on healthy lifestyle.  Dr. Oppenheim is fluent in Spanish and enjoys crossfit training, running, biking, golf and spending time with his family.



Peyman Haghighat, MD

Peyman Haghighat, MD, MS joined Salinas Valley Memorial’s medical staff and Pacific Cancer Care in Salinas in December 2008. Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine/Medical Oncology, Dr. Haghighat is an Assistant Director of Hospice of the Central Coast.





John Clark, MD

Dr. Clark is a board-certified family physician.  Since completion of his medical training, Dr. Clark has dedicated himself to the Salinas Valley.  He earned his medical degree from the University of California Davis School of Medicine and completed his residency at Natividad Medical Center.  He has served as the Chief of Staff and Family Medicine Service Director at Natividad Medical Center.  Dr. Clark joined PrimeCare in 2003, where his specialization includes Maternity Care.
