SVMH Awarded for Exceptional Care

Hospital earns recognition for patient safety and meeting the highest standards of care

SALINAS, CA, July 29, 2011—Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) has been honored as a Baby-Friendly® birth facility. Designation as a Baby-Friendly birth facility recognizes the hospital's Perinatal Services team for following the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, offering mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully start and continue breastfeeding their babies. The designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey and maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps. SVMHS is one of only about 110 hospitals nationwide to receive this international designation.

Baby-Friendly USA is part of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)—an international program of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund. BFHI celebrates hospitals and birth centers that implement policies and practices that support parents in making informed choices about how they feed and care for their babies.

SVMHS has also recently been honored with other awards that reflect an outstanding commitment to excellence in patient care.

  • SalinasValley Memorial Healthcare System has received national recognition by being named a Blue Distinction Center for Hip and Knee Replacement by BlueCross BlueShield Association. This designation recognizes Salinas Valley Memorial's advanced expertise in providing quality patient care for joint replacement patients, and it is the result of meeting stringent clinical criteria on important standards of quality, collaborative care, and affordability. Salinas Valley Memorial is the only hospital in Monterey County to be designated a Blue Distinction Center for Joint Replacement.

  • Salinas Valley Memorial received the American Heart Association's 2011 Get With The Guidelines—Heart Failure Bronze Quality Achievement Award. By providing exceptional care for patients with heart failure, SVMHS is the only hospital in Monterey County to receive this award. SVMHS has also earned the Get With The Guidelines—Coronary Artery Disease Award for the past four years.

  • By completing a rigorous training program and demonstrating policies, procedures and care that meet the highest standards, Salinas Valley Memorial has been recognized as one of only eight hospitals in California to achieve BETA Healthcare Group's Quest for Zero: OB status. This status confirms the hospital's commitment to furthering patient safety while reducing insurance costs.
