Background: Thirty six Salinas-area children are attending Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System's 26th annual Mark Velcoff, MD Asthma Day Camp. Asthma Day Camp is for children who will benefit from a positive experience with outdoor physical activity, combinedwith practical education. The purpose of the Camp is to help raise self-esteem and confidence in young people suffering with asthma. Children learn about asthma, how to avoid "triggers", about mediations, breathing and relaxation exercises, nutrition, when to call a doctor, and much more.
Many of the children who attend this camp have stayed away from physical activity, afraid that it could trigger an attack. Asthma Day Camp teaches children that with some knowledge, they can lead healthy, active lives. Some of the highlights of this year's camp include:
