SALINAS, CA, January 17, 2011: For the 5th consecutive year, employees from Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System will conduct the annual Junior Achievement Day at Roosevelt Elementary School in Salinas on Wednesday, January 19th, from 8:30am - 11:30am. Students in each classroom at Roosevelt will spend the morning with the Junior Achievement curriculum, which teaches the basic concepts of business and economics and how education is relevant to the workplace. In all, 28 employees and volunteers from Salinas Valley Memorial are assigned to classrooms, teaching age-appropriate material to each grade level.
In the video from last year's JA Day (link above), you can see how the concept of paying taxes is taught and received by elementary school children who have to relinquish some of their "pay" in this classroom exercise.
From the Junior Achievement website: http://www.ja.org/about/about.shtml
Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.
Our programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities.
