SVMHS Celebrates Sleep Week with Free Ask the Experts Event

SALINAS, CA, February 24, 2014 – The Sleep Medicine Center at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) is celebrating National Sleep Awareness Week with a free Ask the Experts community event. Mazhaz Javaid, MD will be talking about the importance of sleep in a presentation titled Sleep and How it Affects Life.

Dr. Javaid is Medical Director of the SVMHS Sleep Medicine Center, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The Center utilizes state of the art technology to diagnose and treat sleep disorders ranging from snoring to sleep apnea. In addition to overnight sleep studies for adults, the Sleep Medicine Center features a pediatric sleep suite to accommodate younger patients. Sleep disorders in children are known to contribute to medical conditions such as depression, diabetes and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Sleep Awareness Week, which takes place March 2 - 9, 2014, is an annual public education and awareness campaign that concludes with the clock change to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March 9th. Before going to sleep Saturday night, most Americans will advance their clocks and lose one-hour of sleep in the familiar “spring forward” ritual.

The Ask the Experts event featuring Dr. Javaid will take place Tuesday, March 4 from 5:30 to 6:30 at the SVMHS Education Center, 611 Abbott Street, Salinas. Admission is free and light snacks will be served.  While reservations are not required, space is limited. For more information or to secure seating, call 759-1920.
