Salinas, CA, January 6, 2014 – Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) is partnering with Career Exploring, a program to introduce high school and college students to careers though business mentors. Staff and volunteers at SVMHS will serve as mentors and program advisors to participating students as they learn about opportunities in the healthcare field through hands-on activities, leadership development programs and community service projects.
“We are not only meeting the healthcare needs of the community right now, we are taking steps to develop the next generation of health care professionals,” says president/CEO Pete Delgado. “Establishing a Career Exploring post at Salinas Valley Memorial is an investment in the future and helps local students follow their dreams.”
Career Exploring is a worksite-based program for student volunteers 15 through 20 years old. The purpose of the Exploring program is to provide real world career experiences and help students achieve college and career success through leadership and character development, social and professional networking and community service.
SVMHS has a long tradition of youth oriented programs aimed at increasing awareness about job opportunities in the healthcare industry and encouraging young people with an interest in the medical field. Career Exploring at SVMHS complements other programs already in place such as the SVMHS Summer Health Institute, Medical Adventure Camp and Career Pathway Program.
Exploring is a national program, established in 1956 through the Boy Scouts of America and impacts over 100,000 high school students each year. Businesses and community organizations initiate a specific Career Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of youth in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps teens pursue their special interests, grow, and develop.
Thousands of local, regional, and national businesses and organizations deliver the Career Exploring program. Career Exploring posts have been successfully established representing over 100 different career fields.
The Exploring program at SVMHS will conduct an informational meeting for interested students on Tuesday, January 14 at 5 p.m. To register for this meeting or for more information about the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System Career Pathway Program and Exploring Post, contact the Volunteer Services Department at
